Certainly one of the great of African cinema, Djibril Diop Mambéty was a Senegalese director, Actor, and poet whose work continues to inspire and attract acclaim. Born in 1945, Djibril was a stage performer who basked into filmmaking out of the blue. His first film "Contras' City" was already a visual work that would set the tone for his well-crafted, socially aware, and observing work of his time. He followed with "Badou Boy" which would lead the path to "Touki Bouki", his most critically acclaimed work. Then will come "Hyenas" 2o years later, a beautiful Membety's style reprise of the play "The Visit" by  Friedrich Dürrenmatt. He will continue with other short films like his feminist lining short "La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil"..till his death in 1998. Mambéty's cinema was reflective of his time, as a critic of African political society and observant of Senegalese lives. We have selected a few movies that introduce pretty well the work of  Mambéty.
